The Oxford & Cambridge Club
Morning Room Bar

Another project for this prestigious Private Members Club in the heart of London. Working under The Club’s Interior Designer Manuel Cerrone, we were initially asked to simply change the existing colour of the walls. The room had a wonderful example of faux marble below the dado rail and, another on the dado and skirting boards, which was to stay. The brief was to choose a paint colour that better complimented the faux marble than the existing green paint above the dado which did not work favourably. A beautiful Tuscan Red was selected which works beautifully with the colours in the marble, but we first had to make good the surface of the walls in order to achieve a top class finish. We discovered years and years of built up paint and lining paper which was painstakingly removed before completely re-plastering the walls to achieve a perfectly flawless finish.

The room has three huge floor to ceiling windows looking directly out onto Pall Mall, which were largely obscured by heavy curtains. The decision was made to remove these, which not only allowed the magnificent architecture of the windows to be seen in all their glory, but allowed the natural daylight to flood in too. We applied a textured stone plaster finish to all the architraves, with a few random grout lines to complete the look of large pieces of stone, a finish that we have done throughout the Club, highlighting and acknowledging the importance, and splendour of Robert Smirke’s architecture.

We also restored the huge matching mirror and picture frame in the room, recasting damaged and missing sections before gilding them in 23.75CT Versailles Gold leaf. Our final job was to apply an antiqued black stippled finish to the inlay around the frame which picked up on not only the black of the fireplace marble, but in the dado and skirting too. A bigger Bar, new lighting, and restored fireplaces complete this refurbishment, that has managed to retain the best features, whilst successfully giving it a new lease of life, which the Members are delighted with.
