Wood Finishes | Private Residence
Notting Hill

A stunning apartment set in a magnificent mansion block in Central London. The owners decided to undertake a complete refurbishment of the apartment. We worked in partnership with a highly accomplished Designer and Builder who undertook the works. We were tasked with applying bespoke finishes to all the specialist joinery that was made in a range of unique wood.

All the doors and architraves were made from meticulously sourced walnut and we were commissioned to bleach the wood in order to strip out the colour and restain it to achieve the very precise colour and tone that they were after. We then applied numerous coats of oil and wax polish, delivering a natural, even tone with a lustrous sheen across all the woodwork.

The Joinery Design team had beautifully crafted a series of paneled doors and slatted cupboard doors in oak, which we once again bleached, stained and hand finished with multiple coats of oil until the correct colour, tone and sheen were acheived. In addition, the kitchen was reconfigured so we had quite a job ensure that the new joinery matched the existing units in terms of exact colour and sheen.

The bathroom was clad in beautiful Teak wood. We used an ancient method which involves dissolving natural soap flakes in water before applying to the wood. Any excess is then wiped off, allowed to dry, and sanded with a very fine sand paper. This process was repeated a staggering fifteen times before the desired finish is achieved. It was worth it. This treatment of the timber provides protection against moisture as well as adding a beautiful natural lustre to it.

Finally, our Clients wanted to achieve a very natural, antiqued Chinese lacquer look, but not the same as the Lacquer that we had used on the Bar in a previous project. This was a more natural look. We mixed our own Chinese Red chalk paint, sanded it, applied another coat, sanded it and repeated this process many times to build up the surface. Eventually we burnished the surface which totally changed it and it suddenly came to life exposing all our hard work of the layers that we had built up. This was then finished with a coat of wax to achieve an even more antique, leathery look which complemented the other wood finishes throughout the apartment perfectly.

This was such a great job to work on as we used so many different techniques to give all the surfaces not only a bespoke finish, but a totally natural look too.
